Energy Saving Tips

Humans have a penchant for taking things for granted whether we admit it or not. It could range from our health, to our loved ones, etc. However, many people tend to take the most important thing in our life for granted that trumps anything else; our planet.

From our wanderlusts, to the shop-a-holics, our planet is probably the last thing we think about when it comes to our everyday lives. We don't think about the behind the scenes of what goes on, the pollution, the resources used to create products or to get to our destination. As the "green" trend grows, this concern is reaching the masses than it has just 5 years ago.

Here are a few tips that I incorporate into my own everyday life:

1. Turn off electronics when not in use. This includes turning off lights that I do not use at home and work. Yes, I am -that person- that turns off lights in unused conference rooms, printer rooms, kitchenettes, etc. I also turn off unused power-strips to save on energy (they use more energy than you think). As far as air conditioning and heating goes, I rarely use them unless of course in the event of extreme "unbearable" weather. Rooming with the boyfriend leads to compromises in the situation.

2. Stop watching television. I haven't watched tv in years with the exception of being over someone's house and it's on. I never realized how quick you can get sucked into watching it. Laptops and computers are excellent to watch all of your movies and favorite shows anyway. Depending on how much you used your television, the savings could be tremendous or almost unnoticeable. Another great thing about not having a television is the need for cable television is gone. How much savings would that be $50, $75, $100 a month? Plus, you'll have more free time!

3. Walk whenever possible. Living right behind a co-op has its advantages. If I need anything I am out of, I can simply walk with my reusable bags and purchase them. Living next to a park and safe area ( I live in an historic town with its own police force, outside of that however, is not so safe ) also has its benefits as well. Going for a run or walk is a breeze and the lake is always beautiful. When I am at work, I always walk (with a co-worker) to the bank or food if I'm feeling adventurous.

4. Use reusable bags. I rarely go anywhere without my reusable bags! I also reuse produce bags for you guessed it fruits and vegetables! I am not sure how much plastic and paper pollution I've saved (I'm sure there is an online generator) but I know it's a good amount! I also do not use any bags at all if I can or if I'm making a big item purchase, I can put loose smaller items inside the container.

5. Use thrift stores. If you must shop, visit your local thrift store. There are so many treasures and clothes in great condition at very affordable prices. For anyone that loves labels, I found a pair of Juicy Couture Jeans for about $11.00 (org around $150)! Your mind, wallet and the Earth will feel great since you are spending less and not purchasing new items which uses resources to produce.

There are a ton of great ideas out there to save energy, reduce pollution and save money. These are my top five favorite since I practice them myself. Even small steps can make a big impact on our Earth to make it a cleaner, brighter, better place.

Is Being Vegan Natural?

Over the Memorial day weekend, my boyfriend and I went to Great Sage in Clarksville, MD. The question that popped up in my head was "We have to eat a ton of different food to get all the vitamins and minerals and nutrients we need to be healthy so is being vegan natural?"

Since I've become more of a skpetic over the past few months, I believe it was a good question to ponder. It allowed myself to think on the other side and really look at the lifestyle decision I've been so proud I've made.

Justin gave me a great insight. He brought up the fact that being optimally healthy is not natural, only surviving. Then we proceeded to list everything that we humans engage in as not being natural such as eating food not even on this continent, wearing clothes, driving a car, flying in airplanes, working in an office, taking pills when we are sick, etc. Hearing this viewpoint about all of our behaviors, our food, our mode of transportation allowed me to switch gears and come to the conclusion, yes it is unnatural, however, that doesn't make it negative.

Speaking of the eating habits of vegans and "where we get certain things from (the b vitamins and the infamous protein), here is a list of a few vitamins and minerals and all the possible food one can consume and be unnaturally optimally healthy.

*B Vitamins: These are micro-organisms (bacteria). The most common source known to obtain this is through animal products or fortified foods and supplements. Other vegan sources not widely known as brewer's yeast, dulse, kelp, and nori (sea vegetables).

Daily intake: 2 to 3 µg per day

*Calcium: The chemical element known for strong bones. Contrary to the dairy industry propaganda, milk leaches calcium from bones which can cause osteoporosis.  A nifty source Vegan sources include the following: almonds, asparagus, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, broccoli, cabbage, carob, collards, dandelion greens, dulse, figs, kale, kelp, mustard greens, and watercress. Calcium-rich herbs include alfalfa, burdock root, cayenne, chamomile, chickweed, chicory, dandelion, fennel seed, flaxseed, kelp, nettle, paprika, parsley, peppermint, plantain.

Daily intake for ages 19-50: 1000 mg per day

*Essential Fatty Acids: Essential fatty acids" are polyunsaturated fats that the body cannot make. Vegan sources include: flaxseeds, hemp seeds, walnuts, soybeans.

Daily intake:no congruent amount. 250 mg- 500 mg for adults.

*Iodine: Used by the thyroid to maintain a healthy metabolism. Vegan sources include: soy, flax seeds, and raw vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage). Be careful not to get too much.

Daily intake: 150 mcg

*Iron: A part of all cells and does many things in our bodies. For example, iron (as part of the protein hemoglobin) carries oxygen from our lungs throughout our bodies. Having too little hemoglobin is called anemia. Iron also helps our muscles store and use oxygen. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue that impairs the ability to do physical work as well as other issues. This might make you wonder whether the rumors of vegans suffering from anemia have truth to them; however, research shows that iron deficiency in vegans is no more common than it is in the rest of the population. Iron should be taken with vitamin C to aid in more absorption by the body. Vegan sources include: green leafy vegetables, whole grains, almonds, avocados, beets, blackstrap molasses, brewer's yeast, dates, dulse, kelp, kidney and lima beans, millet, peaches, pears, dried fruits, pumpkins, raisins, rice and wheat bran, sesame seeds, soybeans, and watercress. Iron-rich herbs include alfalfa, catnip, cayenne, chamomile, chickweed, dandelion, fennel seed, kelp, lemongrass, paprika, parsley, peppermint, plantain.

Daily intake for ages 19-30: 18 mg per day.
Daily intake for men 19->70: 8 mg per day.

*Protein: Studies show that most vegan diets provide the ideal amounts of protein recommended by the World Health Organization. On the other hand, many omnivores eat more protein than guidelines recommend, and this may have disadvantages for their health. Excessive protein consumption may be associated with health risks. Kidney function can be compromised by too much protein in older people and in patients with kidney disease; also, a high protein intake may adversely affect calcium balance and contribute to osteoporosis.Vegan sources include: legumes/pulses (peas, beans, lentils, soy), nuts (brazils, hazels, almonds, cashews), and seeds (sunflower, pumpkin, sesame). Many vegetables and grains also contribute significant amounts.

Daily intake: suggested around 50 mg per day.
For athletes:  1.2 and 1.7 g/kg (0.5 - 0.8 grams per pound)

To calculate your own daily intake:

1. Weight in pounds divided by 2.2 = weight in kg
2. Weight in kg x 0.8-1.8 gm/kg = protein gm.

There are a great number of nutrition websites out there solely on vegan/vegetarian health. One that I used to gather most of this information can be located here:Veg Health Guide

With all of these delicious and available foods out there, there really is no excuse not to be optimally healthy. Most of these foods can be found in your regular grocery store with nearly all of them available at specialty grocery stores such as Roots, MOM's & Trader Joe's.

 Happy eating!

Minimal Living 101

Music is a huge part of my life, it always has been. Whenever I have the chance, I reach for my laptop or phone and jam out to music from the 60's and 70's. Those decades of such inspiring influence on the music scene speak to me the most. I feel cool, calm and relaxed.

Recently, I have been looking for ways to declutter my life in every way possible. I find myself been pulled to gather unnecessary objects that I've been collecting over the years to recycle, sell and give away. Each time, I finish, I feel I need to do more as if the job isn't done yet.

I have been reading tons of online articles on tips and advice on what I can do to purge once and for all and to make it a habit to living a successful minimalist lifestyle.

Here are 10 great tips.

  1. Your Possessions - Too many material possessions complicate our lives to a greater degree than we ever give them credit. They drain our bank account, our energy, and our attention. They keep us from the ones we love and from living a life based on our values. If you will invest the time to remove nonessential possessions from your life, you will never regret it. For further reading on this, consider Simplify: 7 Guiding Principles to Help Anyone Declutter Their Home and Life.
  2. Your Time Commitments – Most of us have filled our days full from beginning to end with time commitments: work, home, kid’s activities, community events, religious endeavors, hobbies… the list goes on. When possible, release yourself from the time commitments that are not in line with your greatest values.
  3. Your Goals – Reduce the number of goals you are intentionally striving for in your life to one or two. By reducing the number of goals that you are striving to accomplish, you will improve your focus and your success rate. Make a list of the things that you want to accomplish in your life and choose the two most important. When you finish one, add another from your list.
  4. Your Negative Thoughts – Most negative emotions are completely useless. Resentment, bitterness, hate, and jealousy have never improved the quality of life for a single human being. Take responsibility for your mind. Forgive past hurts and replace negative thoughts with positive ones.
  5. Your Debt – If debt is holding you captive, reduce it. Start today. Do what you’ve got to do to get out from under its weight. Find the help that you need. Sacrifice luxury today to enjoy freedom tomorrow.
  6. Your Words – Use fewer words. Keep your speech plain and honest. Mean what you say. Avoid gossip.
  7. Your Artificial Ingredients – Avoid trans fats, refined grain (white bread), high-fructose corn syrup, and too much sodium. Minimizing these ingredients will improve your energy level in the short-term and your health in the long-term. Also, as much as possible, reduce your consumption of over-the-counter medicine – allow your body to heal itself naturally as opposed to building a dependency on substances.
  8. Your Screen Time – Focusing your attention on television, movies, video games, and technology affects your life more than you think. Media rearranges your values. It begins to dominate your life. And it has a profound impact on your attitude and outlook. Unfortunately, when you live in that world on a consistent basis, you don’t even notice how it is impacting you. The only way to fully appreciate its influence in your life is to turn them off.
  9. Your Connections to the World - Relationships with others are good, but constant streams of distraction are bad. Learn when to power off the blackberry, log off facebook, or not read a text. Focus on the important, not the urgent. A steady flow of distractions from other people may make us feel important, needed, or wanted, but feeling important and accomplishing importance are completely different things.
  10. Your Multi-Tasking - Research indicates that multi-tasking increases stress and lowers productivity. while single-tasking is becoming a lost art, learn it. Handle one task at a time. Do it well. And when it is complete, move to the next.
(website: http://www.becomingminimalist.com/2010/03/16/the-10-most-important-things-to-simplify-in-your-life/)

I find that possessions ring the most true for me in the above list. I have cleansed myself if you will of a lot of possessions over the past few months but I still feel consumed.

The main inspiration of this direction in my life is my constant moving. I have moved 3 times in less than a year and packing was a nightmare for me. In fact, moving back to Laurel from College Park really showed me how living a minimalist lifestyle looks and feels better. Two weeks before the move date, everything I did not need or use was in boxes in a closet. All that was left in my room was a bookcase with a few things, my nightstand which had my alarm and lamp, my bed, my desk with nothing on it and my aquarium and stand. The feelings I had each time I entered my room were, calm, relaxed and not stressed.

There are plenty of great writers and websites out there to gather more important and tips to start and live a minimalist lifestyle. The list could go on if I compiled such a thing.

It's Alive (Timeline of Wheatgrass)

I have been growing wheatgrass for about a month. I am no expert, (I grew great batches and not so great batches)

Below is a picture documented post about growing wheatgrass. With this batch of hard red wheat berries, I let them soak for about 12 hours, drained them, then let them sit for about 6 hours. Below is a picture of the seeds pre-soaked.
Below are the same seeds 12 hours later. Notice the size difference.

After I let the seeds sit for about 6 hours, I sprinkled fertilizer on the bottom of the containers. Afterwards, I covered the containers with about two inches of soil and scattered the seeds on top. I soaked paper towels and I placed them over the seeds where they now reside until the grass starts to grow. I dampen the paper towels twice daily.

Keep in mind all of this occurred within a week time frame. I have two bowls and one tray that are roughly the same height. Once the grass reaches about 6-10 inches, you can juice away and receive the full benefits of wheatgrass.

1 Wheatgrass Juice is one of the best sources of living chlorophyll available.

2 Chlorophyll is the first product of light and, therefore, contains more light energy than any other element.

3 Wheatgrass juice is a crude chlorophyll and can be taken orally and as a colon implant without toxic side effects.

4 Chlorophyll is the basis of all plant life.

5 Wheatgrass is high in oxygen like all green plants that contain chlorophyll. The brain and all body tissues function at an optimal level in a highly-oxygenated environment.

6 Chlorophyll is anti-bacterial and can be used inside and outside the body as a healer.

7 Dr. Bernard Jensen says that it only takes minutes to digest wheatgrass juice and uses up very little body energy.

8 Science has proven that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria.

9 Chlorophyll (wheatgrass) rebuilds the bloodstream. Studies of various animals have shown chlorophyll to be free of any toxic reaction. The red cell count was returned to normal within 4 to 5 days of the administration of chlorophyll, even in those animals which were known to be extremely anemic or low in red cell count.

10 Farmers in the Midwest who have sterile cows and bulls put them on wheatgrass to restore fertility. (The high magnesium content in chlorophyll builds enzymes that restore the sex hormones.)

11 Chlorophyll can be extracted from many plants, but wheatgrass is superior because it has been found to have over 100 elements needed by man. If grown in organic soil, it absorbs 92 of the known 102 minerals from the soil.

12 Wheatgrass has what is called the grass-juice factor, which has been shown to keep herbivorous animals alive indefinitely.

13 Dr. Ann Wigmore and institutes based on her teachings has been helping people get well from chronic disorders for 30 years using wheatgrass.

14 Liquid chlorophyll gets into the tissues, refines them and makes them over.

15 Wheatgrass Juice is a superior detoxification agent compared to carrot juice and other fruits and vegetables. Dr Earp-Thomas, associate of Ann Wigmore, says that 15 pounds of Wheatgrass is the equivalent of 350 pounds of carrot, lettuce, celery, and so forth.

16 Liquid chlorophyll washes drug deposits from the body.

17 Chlorophyll neutralizes toxins in the body.

18 Chlorophyll helps purify the liver.

19 Chlorophyll improves blood sugar problems.

20 In the American Journal of Surgery (1940), Benjamin Gruskin, M.D. recommends chlorophyll for its antiseptic benefits. The article suggests the following clinical uses for chlorophyll: to clear up foul smelling odors, neutralize Strep infections, heal wounds, hasten skin grafting, cure chronic sinusitis, overcome chronic inner-ear inflammation and infection, reduce varicose veins and heal leg ulcers, eliminate impetigo and other scabby eruptions, heal rectal sores, successfully treat inflammation of the uterine cervix, get rid of parasitic vaginal infections, reduce typhoid fever, and cure advanced pyorrhea in many cases.21 Wheatgrass Juice cures acne and even help to remove scars after it has been ingested for seven to eight months. The diet must be improved at the same time.

22 Wheatgrass juice acts as a detergent in the body and is used as a body deodorant.

23 A small amount of wheatgrass juice in the human diet helps prevents tooth decay.

24 Wheatgrass juice held in the mouth for 5 minutes will help eliminate toothaches. It pulls poisons from the gums.

25 Gargle Wheat grass Juice for a sore throat.

26 Drink Wheatgrass Juice for skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis.

27 Wheat grass Juice keeps the hair from graying.

28 Pyorrhea of the mouth: lay pulp of wheatgrass soaked in juice on diseased area in mouth or chew wheat grass, spitting out the pulp.

29 By taking Wheat grass Juice, one may feel a difference in strength, endurance, health, and spirituality, and experience a sense of well-being.

30 Wheatgrass juice improves the digestion.

31 Wheat grass juice is high in enzymes.

32 Wheatgrass juice is an excellent skin cleanser and can be absorbed through the skin for nutrition. Pour green juice over your body in a tub of warm water and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off with cold water.

33 Wheatgrass implants (enemas) are great for healing and detoxifying the colon walls. The implants also heal and cleanse the internal organs. After an enema, wait 20 minutes, then implant 4 ounces of wheatgrass juice. Retain for 20 minutes.

34 Wheatgrass juice is great for constipation and keeping the bowels open. It is high in magnesium.

35 Dr. Birscher, a research scientist, called chlorophyll "concentrated sun power." He said, "chlorophyll increases the function of the heart, affects the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus, and the lungs."

36 According to Dr. Birscher, nature uses chlorophyll (wheatgrass) as a body cleanser, rebuilder, and neutralizer of toxins.

37 Wheat grass juice can dissolve the scars that are formed in the lungs from breathing acid gasses. The effect of carbon monoxide is minimized since chlorophyll increases hemoglobin production.

38 Wheatgrass Juice reduces high blood pressure and enhances the capillaries.

39 Wheat grass Juice can remove heavy metals from the body.

40 Wheatgrass juice is great for blood disorders of all kinds.

My Landmark Forum Experience

Over this past weekend, I spent 9am - 10:15 pm Friday through Sunday at the Landmark Forum in Alexandria, VA.

The week prior I read up on what to expect and what I read was a mixture of good and bad. I read it's a cult, blood sucking, rules rules rules type of deal. However I had also read that it was a fulfilling experience and worth it. My boyfriend completed it a few years ago and was excited and all for it.

So the first day, I arrived tired and nervous. Within 1 hour, we found out one thing, "You are a jerk." We learned about rackets and our strong suits. A major breakthrough that I had was "What happened" and "Story/interpretation". We were given assignments to do where one was to write a letter to someone I had been writing a racket on. By the end of the night I was energized and exhausted.

Second day, we learned about strong suits and how an incident occurred that made us how we are today. Translation: You are making decisions based on your {insert young age here] age self. Still you are a jerk. Before break, more people shared and this day was what I call the waterworks day. During break we were to call the person we wrote the letter to. I did so and man was that hard getting myself to do that but as I was talking, it was super easy. I felt so much better after doing that.

More people shared their life stories which I found to be incredible. During break we were to go out to eat with a group. "What?!?! no! why?!" were my thoughts. So I went out with my group and I'm glad I did. Our assignments were of the same format but the letter was targeted towards sharing how you were inauthentic or incomplete with.

Third day, I did not write my letter (because I'm still a jerk) so whoever did not, had to write it during a break. My decision was based on what are the issues I'm bringing into my present relationship(s) so I began writing. After break we had to share our letter to our partner. More sharing and sharing until another break. I used my letter as an outline and called this person. Thought it was done and I'm glad I accomplished it. I feel complete you could say. When we returned, we learned what the forum was all about. My luck, I was nauseous, had a head cold and cold chills. I slept in my car for about an hour and returned. Graduates were invited to the last part of the evening so Justin was there. Awesome!

Tuesday evening is the last meeting for this weekend and looking back on everything, I'm glad I attended and really participated. I also recommend it to anyone.

Raw Food Movement

Since I've become vegetarian, I've became vegan. Since becoming vegan, I've been curious about raw food. Vegetarian was a gateway for me. I figure that most vegans venture down that road as being healthy becomes a obsession.

"Obsessed is what the weak and lazy call the Dedicated" <-- not my quote Raw food diets have been more mainstream over the years. This calls for 75% of the food you consume has to be raw (food that has not been cooked or when cooked under 104 degrees F.) To get as much nutritional value out of these foods, they also must be unprocessed and organic. People who ear mostly raw have reported to feel better, be more energized and weight loss.

Raw Food consists of the following:

~Fresh fruit
~Raw vegetables
~Nuts and seeds
~Legumes
~Sprouts

Planning out meals works for me so that I don't have to hurry or stress about what will I eat tonight?

Food charts are easy and helpful when learning what you should eat, quantity, what to avoid, etc.

Source: Website is in the picture.

Overall, one should focus on these tips below:

~Lost of fruits and vegetables (the more variety, the better)
~Mostly green leafy veggies
~Include nuts, seeds, and other suitable protein sources into your meals
~Iron and calcium (dark leafy vegetables)
~Water & fresh juices (good idea to invest in a juicer)

There are plenty of websites out there to make research and finding sample meal plans efficient and easy.

Meal Ideas

~Adding lemon to water helps energize your body
~For snacks feast on raw almonds or other nuts or a piece of fruit
~Juice juice juice! Add 2 or 3 types of fruits and 4 or 5 vegetables for a fresh highly nutritious drink. I recommend The Juice Bible.
~Make salads! Using kale, spinach or dark lettuce mix with hemp seeds, nuts and a ton of other vegetables is a great way to feel full while enjoying a variety of foods.
~Raw snack bars. Not only do they taste great but they are affordable! I recommend "Raw Revolution" in any flavor!
~Mix in avocados whenever you can. They are regarded as a superfood and a complete food.

If you want to learn more about this incredible diet, a great resource (where I got some of my information here from) is:

Wheatgrass on the Brain

Lately, I have become overly excited about growing wheatgrass because of the benefits and well it just looks very pretty. I have been researching ideas about creative places and items to grow it in. I will post my own doings once the grass is a few inches.

I found this item to be modern, cool and clean. The white really makes the green grass pop and you can put these almost anywhere! At $25.00 a set plus shipping.

Juicing for Life

As I grow older, I realize once I really started getting into fitness, my curiosity led me to look into how to fuel my body.

Watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead got the boyfriend and I thinking we should start juicing. The benefits are unbelievable. The body is able to digest the micro-nutrients easier and you are able to consume more fruits and vegetables rather than just eating them.

We purchased a Masticating Juicers / Single Gear / Single Auger Juicers.

Below is a recent juicing frenzy we went on. All of the ingredients are organic.

From left: pineapple, pears, gala apples, grapefruit, kiwis, limes, raspberries

From left: carrot juice, spinach, broccoli, apple pears, celery stalks, beets, fennel, asparagus, kale, cabbage, lacinto kale, potatoes, cucumbers, sweet potatos, carrots.

Making carrot juice

From left: cabbage, red cabbage, broccoli, kale, fennel & potatoes ready for juicing

From left: kale, apples, pears, celery, more kale in line

Cabbage cabbage everywhere

All of the juice from all of those yummy vegetables & fruits.

Each juice had it own flavor and of course we mixed flavors for a little excitement.
Juice is wonderful on your skin, digestive tract as well as your immune system.

3.4.2012

I've contracted a green thumb this past few weeks and I've started my indoor garden. I ordered a few varieties of vegetable seeds and I anticipate their arrival. So far I have herbs and wheatgrass growing. I never knew the benefits of herbs and I was aware of the benefits of wheatgrass. Below is a list of the benefits of the herbs I have so far.

Basil Benefits

Basil leaves contain many notable plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.

Basil herb contains many polyphenolic flavonoids like orientin and vicenin. These compounds were tested in vitro laboratory studies for possible anti-oxidant protection against radiation-induced lipid per-oxidation in mouse liver.

Basil leaves contains many health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene and terpineol. These compounds are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

The herbs parts are very low in calories and contain no cholesterol, but are very rich source of many essential nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are essential for optimum health.

Basil herb contains exceptionally high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin A, cryptoxanthin, lutein and zea-xanthin. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease process.

Zeaxanthin, a yellow flavonoid carotenoid compound, is selectively absorbed into the retinal macula lutea where it found to filter harmful UV rays from reaching retina. Herbs, fruits, and vegetables that are rich in this compound help to protect from age related macular disease (AMRD), especially in the elderly.

Vitamin A is known to have antioxidant properties and is essential for vision. It is also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin. Consumption of natural foods rich in vitamin-A has been found to help body protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Vitamin K in basil is essential for many coagulant factors in the blood and plays vital role in the bone strengthening function by helping mineralization process in the bones.

Basil herb contains good amount of minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

Basil leaves are an excellent source of iron, contains 3.17 mg/100 g of fresh leaves (about 26% of RDA). Iron, being a component of hemoglobin inside the red blood cells, determines the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.

Cilantro Benefits

Cilantro herb contains no cholesterol; but is rich in anti-oxidants and dietary fiber which help reduce LDL or "bad cholesterol" while increasing HDL or "good cholesterol" levels.

The leaves and seeds contain many essential volatile oils such as borneol, linalool, cineole, cymene, terpineol, dipentene, phellandrene, pinene and terpinolene.

The leaves and stem tips are also rich in numerous anti-oxidant polyphenolic flavonoids such as quercetin, kaempferol, rhamnetin and epigenin.

The herb is a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium in an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Iron is essential for red blood cell production. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase.

It is also rich in many vital vitamins including folic-acid, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin-A, beta carotene, vitamin-C that are essential for optimum health. Vitamin-C is a powerful natural antioxidant. Cilantro leaves provides 30% of daily recommended levels of vitamin-C.

It provides 6748 IU of vitamin-A per 100 g, about 225% of recommended daily intake. Vitamin-A, an important fat soluble vitamin and anti-oxidant, is also required for maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin and is also essential for vision. Consumption of natural foods rich in vitamin-A and flavonoids (carotenes) helps body protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Cilantro is one of the richest herbal sources for vitamin K; provides about 258% of DRI. Vitamin-K has potential role in bone mass building by promoting osteotrophic activity in the bones. It also has established role in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease patients by limiting neuronal damage in their brain.

This humble backyard herb provides (% of RDA/100g)-
15% of folates,
11% of vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine),
45% of vitamin C,
225% of vitamin A,
258% of vitamin K,
22% of iron and
18% of manganese.

Oregano Benefits

Oregano contains impressive list of plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.

The herb parts contain no cholesterol; but are rich source of dietary fiber, which helps to control blood cholesterol levels.

Oregano contains many health benefiting essential oils such as carvacrol, thymol, limonene, pinene, ocimene, and caryophyllene. The leaves and flowering stems of the plant are strongly anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, carminative, cholagogue (help gall bladder secretion), diaphoretic (sweat production), expectorant, stimulant, and mildly tonic properties. Its decoction is taken by mouth for the treatment of colds, influenza, mild fevers, indigestion, stomach upsets and painful menstruation.

Thymol is also been found to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal activities.
The herb is rich in poly-phenolic flavonoid anti-oxidants (vitamin A, carotenes, lutein, zea-xanthin and cryptoxanthin) and has been rated as one of the plant source with highest anti-oxidant activities. These compounds help act as protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease process.

The active principles in the herb may increase the motility of the gastro-intestinal tract as well as increase the digestion power by increasing gastro-intestinal secretions.

This exotic herb is an excellent source of minerals like potassium, calcium, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure caused by high sodium. Manganese and copper are used by the body as co-factors for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron helps prevent anemia. Magnesium, and calcium are important minerals for bone metabolism.

Fresh herb is an excellent source of antioxidant vitamin, vitamin-C. Vitamin C helps body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals.

Wheatgrass Benefits

Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary Open House

Sunday September 25, 2011 was the annual Open House & Fundraiser at Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary.

I have always wanted to visit the place for a few months now and this was my chance. The aura and vibe was something I have been searching for for quite some time. The first thing you notice is the rolling hills and the grasslands. For an overcast day, it was a beautiful site to see.

The animals living there had been rescues for numerous places. It was delightful seeing the lambs, goats, chickens, and pigs behaving naturally and freely. The cows were allowed to roam free. Given that it was an open house, guests were able to interact with the animals.

There was also a guest speaker; author of The 30 Day Vegan Challenge numerous others gave an inspiring and heartfelt speech followed by a 70's festival-esque band. The vegan food donated by restaurants such as the vegetable garden really took it home.

I can't wait to start volunteering there and breaking into the animal-rights realm.

Almost Halfway Through the Year..

I've noticed I haven't written in here for quite some time. San Fran was awesome and we had a good time.

The purpose of this post is to recap on what's been of this year and my, I'll say it has been a ride.

I set a few goals for myself in the new year and accomplished quite a few actually. Of course I stated previously that I changed my position at work from being Project Support to MIS Specialist which is exciting. I now accomplish more challenging things and am always learning something else.

Though, the biggest one would be I moved out. I knew there would be challenges but I didn't know how much exactly. For the most of 2010, I had been saving up a "Moving Out" fund to jump-start on everything that needed to be purchased and man, I'm glad I did. The expenses sure shot up in just 2 weeks.

Buying furniture, utensils, cleaning supplies, bathroom stuff, kitchen stuff, bed room stuff. I have yet to add up on much I spend in preparing. The other set of challenges was getting everything inside/putting it together. I have to say that it is coming together nicely though I'm still not 100% done (I'm sure I'll never be) but I am content.

The biggest change for me has been having my own schedule. I almost have some sort of groove set in, but I am very open to day to day changes. In fact I welcome them. This brings into my next goal which is getting more involved with one of my hobbies "modeling". I put quotations but I don't think of myself as one at all so when I think of a better term I will use it unforgivingly.

I have started into doing only paid work as it's worth the drive and time. I recently did a HD video workshop with Canon in Rockville, MD. Check out the link below:

http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/events_calendar/event_details/cll_events/20110515_washington_dc_hd_cll.shtml

It was an experience. Meeting the established photographers, working with them, interacting with the Canon team and the other model was a lot of fun. We did simple activities while they filmed and even went outside which caused quite a stir! I learned a few basics on editing film and now I'll be able to point out all of the pointers the presenters gave. I even got invited back to participate in another one when they return.

From that experience, I wouldn't mind doing more workshops to help people learn more about their hobby/career and to take it one more step further.

This is a new chapter in my life and I can feel changes taking affect even right now. More exciting updates to come!

30.3.2011

Some pictures and things make me miss my grandparents back when A. my grandpa was alive and B.they were in better health.

I hope to find a love I can grow old with one day and give my children endless opportunities and my grandchildren great inspiration for life.

Until then, I'll keep moving forward.

We've got a line in the sky

I like when my hair is tousled to the left and it feels unmanageable. Please stay like this.

I'm listening to Golden Earring "Radar Love". The beat is perfect for how I feel right now.

I believe I am growing more confident in the major I want to peruse. It's not in my comfort zone since there's not a specific job one can get after graduating.. but I believe I will be happier down the road because "outcomes" are what I am interested in doing the most.

I can take it all online and during the evening & work & move out and continually grow, mature and thrive.

Transferring in the fall may be in my future. Moving out may be in the near near future. I am as warm, crisp and chipper as this day is though my new vitamins may be doing it also. I feel untouchable.

Also San Fran is less than 1 month. The joy.

2.17.2011

I'm creating a challenge for myself this year.

I call it 'Round The World. Original right?

Well the whole point is to try different cuisines from around the world (vegetarian of course). So I will be having a map of the world and selecting a good amount of countries of cuisine to try.

I better start getting hungry.

"Run Me Down"

Run me down in the winter,
Run me down spring,
Got to the place
Can't do a goddamn thing
But after a while,
You ain't gonna run me down anymore

Run me down in the city,
Run me down on the farm,
Run me with your eyes
And your heavy charm
But after a while,
You ain't gonna run me down anymore

I do for you, lord do for me,
You run me down, where you want me to be
But after a while,
You ain't gonna run me down anymore

-Black Keys "Run Me Down"
